This has significantly disrupted daily movement and adversely affected business activities. With forecasts predicting more rain and intermittent heavy spells, residents are looking toward the Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) to address these issues urgently and restore normalcy.
Impact on Traders and Businesses
Traders in busy market areas are reporting a noticeable decline in footfall and delays in loading and unloading goods due to stagnant water and clogged drains. In several localities, rainwater mixed with silt and waste has entered shopfronts, damaging merchandise and creating unhygienic conditions. The persistent waterlogging is forcing many shopkeepers to temporarily shut down or operate at reduced capacity, leading to financial losses.
Challenges for Commuters
Pedestrians are finding it extremely difficult to navigate broken footpaths and water-filled potholes, while two-wheeler riders face a heightened risk of skidding on slippery roads. Auto-rickshaws and buses are being compelled to take diversions, which adds to traffic congestion and increases travel time for commuters. The situation is particularly grim during peak hours, when waterlogging worsens due to heavy downpours.
Urgent Demands from Chamber of Commerce
GK Adappagoudar, president of the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has urged the HDMC to undertake immediate desilting of drains, removal of plastic and debris from stormwater inlets, and clearance of choke points where water is backing up. He emphasized the need for special attention to low-lying pockets where rainwater routinely accumulates, suggesting temporary pumping arrangements and quick repairs to damaged drain covers. Adappagoudar also called for round-the-clock monitoring and deployment of rescue teams during peak rainfall hours to clear blockages as soon as they occur.
Health and Safety Concerns
Social activist Gurunath Ullikashi raised concerns over sanitation and health risks arising from the waterlogging. He requested coordinated action among the HDMC, electricity department, and traffic police to ensure safe movement of people and vehicles. Key recommendations include proper lighting in flooded areas, timely barricading of dangerous spots, and deployment of emergency response teams to assist stranded citizens.
