A hunger strike by 14 inmates at a sub-jail in Bayana town of Bharatpur district has intensified, with nine of them admitted to hospital Tuesday after their condition turned serious over the last few days. The remaining five are being treated within jail premises under medical supervision.
Reason for Protest
The protesting inmates, alleging a lack of basic amenities in the Bayana sub-jail, have been demanding their transfer to Sewar Central Jail, citing better facilities there. They were shifted from Gangapur City jail on April 22 and began the strike on April 25.
Health Complications
Due to prolonged fasting, several prisoners reported low sugar levels, dizziness and weakness. Two medical teams, sent on the orders of Bayana sub-district hospital principal medical officer Dr Jogendra Gurjar, are monitoring them and administering drips.
Official Response
Sub-divisional magistrate Deepak Mittal and additional superintendent of police Hariram Kumawat visited the jail and tried to persuade the inmates to end the strike, but they remained firm on their demand. Jailer Kedarnath Sharma said 30 prisoners were brought from Gangapur City jail on April 22. Of them, 16 called off the strike within a day following persuasion, while 14 continued.
Family Concerns
Meanwhile, family members gathered outside the jail seeking permission to meet the inmates. Authorities said the situation is under close watch.
