A team from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has arrived in Kozhikode following the confirmation of a Nipah virus case in the district. The contact list has now expanded to 100 individuals, according to health officials.
Contact List Breakdown
The updated contact list includes four people categorized as very high-risk, 14 as high-risk, and 82 as low-risk. Health authorities are closely monitoring all contacts and have initiated necessary protocols to contain the spread of the virus.
ICMR's Role
The ICMR team is expected to assist local health officials in epidemiological surveillance, sample collection, and testing. Their expertise will be crucial in managing the situation and preventing further transmission.
Kerala's health department has been on high alert since the Nipah case was confirmed. The state has a history of effectively handling Nipah outbreaks, with previous incidents in 2018 and 2021.
Residents in Kozhikode and nearby areas have been advised to take precautions, including avoiding contact with sick individuals and practicing good hygiene. Health workers are conducting door-to-door surveys to identify any additional cases.
The Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease that can cause severe respiratory illness and encephalitis. Early detection and isolation are key to controlling outbreaks.
