The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall across several districts in Kerala, effective from Sunday to Tuesday. The districts of Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Malappuram, and Ernakulam are placed under yellow alert on Sunday.
Monsoon Advance Expected
The IMD stated that conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance in the next two to three days. Monsoon rains are expected to progress into more parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, the Lakshadweep area, and most parts of the Bay of Bengal.
Cyclonic Circulations
A cyclonic circulation persists over the southeast Arabian Sea and its surrounding areas. Additionally, another cyclonic circulation is present over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Tamil Nadu coast. A separate cyclonic circulation continues over the central-east and southeast Bay of Bengal.
Rainfall Distribution in Past Week
During the week of May 21 to 27, Alappuzha, Kollam, and Kottayam districts received large excess rainfall, while Ernakulam recorded excess rainfall. In contrast, Malappuram, Palakkad, and Wayanad districts recorded large deficient rainfall. Kannur, Idukki, and Kasaragod received deficient rains compared to normal. The remaining districts experienced normal rainfall.
