Imran Khan Launches Scathing Attack on Pakistan's Judiciary from Prison
Pakistan's incarcerated former prime minister, Imran Khan, has launched a blistering verbal assault against the country's judiciary, accusing judges of having "sold their souls for personal privileges" and claiming that he and his wife are being systematically denied justice through the court system.
Eid Conversation Reveals Deepening Frustration
The 73-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder leader made these explosive accusations during a telephonic conversation with his sons on the occasion of Eid, which was subsequently posted on his official X account by his family members. Khan's son, Kasim Khan, stated that his father specifically wanted this message to be conveyed directly to the Pakistani public.
"The judges in this country should be ashamed of themselves," the post quoted Khan as saying. "Time and time again, we have gone to the judiciary. But they have sold their souls for their paid personal privileges. They have sold their integrity."
Allegations of Inhumane Treatment Toward Wife
In a particularly emotional segment of his message, Khan made what appeared to be an indirect reference to Pakistan's powerful military establishment while discussing the treatment of his third wife, Bushra Bibi.
"They know they cannot break me, so they turn to my wife," Khan asserted. "How can they allow this inhumane treatment of Bushra Bibi, simply to blackmail me? She spends 24 hours a day in isolation, except for 30 minutes with me per week — and even that is often ignored."
The former cricketer-turned-politician emphasized that harming women, children, and the elderly was "un-Islamic" and that the motives behind such actions were "plain and clear." He reiterated that judges bear ultimate responsibility for justice within society and should feel profound shame for their actions.
Legal Background and Current Incarceration
Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 and is currently housed in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, facing multiple legal cases. The former first couple was convicted on January 17, 2025, in the high-profile Al-Qadir Trust corruption case, resulting in Khan receiving a 14-year prison sentence while Bushra Bibi was sentenced to seven years.
The conviction stemmed from allegations that they caused a loss of approximately PKR 50 billion to the national exchequer by allegedly providing relief to a property tycoon in exchange for land designated for the Al-Qadir Trust. Beyond this conviction, Khan also faces pending trials under Pakistan's Anti-Terrorism Act, linked to protests organized by his party on May 9, 2023.
Family Separation and Government Restrictions
The Eid conversation marked a rare communication opportunity for Khan with his sons, Suleman and Kasim, who reside in London with their mother and Khan's first wife, Jemima Goldsmith. According to PTI sources, such family interactions have become exceptionally difficult due to government-imposed restrictions.
Khan's political party claims that the administration led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has implemented a ban on Khan's meetings with both family members and legal representatives, allegedly in retaliation for his criticism of Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Khan's sons have expressed their desire to travel to Pakistan for a personal visit but report being denied visas by Pakistani authorities. Recently, Pakistan's Information Minister Atta Tarar suggested the brothers could enter the country using their National Identity Cards for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP).
Jemima Goldsmith responded to this suggestion by asserting that the government wants her sons to travel using Pakistani identity documents specifically to ensure they would not have British diplomatic protection once inside Pakistan.
The ongoing situation highlights the deepening political tensions within Pakistan and raises significant questions about judicial independence, prisoner rights, and the treatment of political figures within the country's legal framework.
