The Indian government has mandated that from April 2025, all car manufacturers must conduct fuel efficiency and mileage tests for new vehicle models under two conditions: with the air-conditioning system turned on and with it turned off. This was announced via a notification by the road transport ministry on Sunday.
More Realistic Mileage Figures
The move aims to provide customers with more accurate mileage figures, enhancing transparency and aiding informed purchasing decisions. The new norms apply to both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs). Currently, manufacturers declare fuel efficiency based on tests with the AC switched off.
Initially, the ministry proposed implementing the new testing regime from October 2024. However, after consultations with the automobile industry, the revised timeline for new models has been notified. Industry insiders indicate that manufacturers have requested additional time for existing models, and the timeline for those vehicles is expected to be announced soon.
Display Requirements
After testing, car manufacturers and importers must display the mileage figures for both AC-on and AC-off conditions in the user manual and on their websites.
While car manufacturers cited European norms, where only mileage without AC is considered, the government noted that Indian conditions differ, prompting the new regulations.
