The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday strongly criticized the Norwegian press for its questions regarding press freedom in India. During a press conference, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George engaged in a tense exchange with a journalist, emphasizing the extensive reach of India's media landscape.
Response to Misunderstandings
George highlighted the scale of India's media ecosystem, stating, "You know how many stories are up here. We have how many breaking news coming every day in the evening. At least 200 TV channels in Delhi alone, in English language, in Hindi language and multiple languages. People have no understanding of the scale of India." He further added that many individuals misinterpret India after reading reports published by what he described as "godforsaken, ignorant NGOs."
Constitutional Guarantees
The MEA official underscored that the Indian Constitution guarantees fundamental rights to all citizens, including women. "We have a constitution which guarantees the rights of the people, fundamental rights of the people. We have equal rights for the women of our country, which is very important," George said. He noted that India granted women the right to vote in 1947, earlier than many other nations, reflecting the country's commitment to equality and human rights.
George emphasized that the right to change government through voting is a testament to India's democratic values. "We believe in equality, we believe in human rights. And what is the best example of human rights? The right to change government, the right to vote. And that is what is happening in India. We are so proud of that," he added.
The MEA's remarks come amid ongoing discussions about press freedom globally, with India asserting its robust media environment and constitutional protections.
