Indian Army, Russian Forces Discuss Deeper Military Ties

The Indian Army and Russian forces have held discussions to further deepen their military partnership during the 5th sub-working group (land) meeting. Sharing details on X on Saturday, the Indian Army stated that the meeting under the India–Russia Inter Governmental Commission (IRIGC) on military and military technical cooperation concluded successfully, marking another significant milestone in strengthening defence ties between the Indian Army and the Russian land forces.

Productive Deliberations

The post added that both sides held productive deliberations aimed at enhancing mutual learning, operational synergy, and bilateral military capabilities, further reinforcing the longstanding India-Russia defence partnership. As per the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), the delegation also visited the Shatrujeet Brigade to explore additional avenues of defence cooperation.

High-Stakes Sectors

During his visit to India earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had revealed that Moscow and New Delhi have engaged in detailed discussions spanning the high-stakes sectors of defence manufacturing, space exploration, and fertiliser cooperation. He also confirmed that the roadmap for future collaboration includes joint production of weapons and greater collaboration in the space sector.

Troop Deployment Pact

A pact allowing India and Russia to station 3,000 troops and a limited number of naval ships and aircraft in each other’s territory has already come into effect since January 12 this year. The pact was signed between New Delhi and Moscow in February last year. This agreement underscores the deepening strategic ties between the two nations, enabling enhanced military cooperation and rapid response capabilities in times of need.

The latest meeting under the IRIGC framework reflects the commitment of both countries to bolster their defence cooperation, which has been a cornerstone of their bilateral relationship for decades. The discussions are expected to pave the way for more joint exercises, technology transfers, and collaborative projects in the defence sector.
