Indore: After several delays, the extended 11-kilometer second phase of Indore Metro, stretching from Super Corridor-3 to Hotel Radisson (Malviya Nagar Square), is likely to be flagged off on June 20.
Inauguration Details
“As per the proposed schedule, chief minister Mohan Yadav and Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar will jointly inaugurate the extended corridor, with commercial operations commencing the following day on June 21,” Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited officials told TOI.
Operational Plans
The officials are currently finalizing fares, frequencies and a consolidated schedule for the combined 17-kilometer operational loop. The unified route will feature 16 elevated stations, expanding connectivity from the baseline Gandhi Nagar station to high-density stations like Bhwarasla, Sukhlia, Vijay Nagar, and Radisson.
Connectivity Benefits
This phase connects major residential complexes, commercial markets, airport, and the Special Economic Zone, which houses companies like TCS, Infosys, and Yash Technologies.
Ridership Projections
Local authorities estimate the new route will directly cater to 4 to 6 lakh daily commuters, with daily metro ridership projected between 25,000 and 40,000 passengers during the initial stabilization period.
Background and Significance
The expansion comes as a critical intervention for the transit network. Since the launch of the first phase on May 31, 2025, the project has recorded low average ridership, attracting only about 2.5 lakh total passengers in its first year. The sharp decline in commuters occurred after promotional introductory fares ended, resulting in operational losses due to a limited network footprint.
The newly extended urban stretch, cleared earlier by Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, is expected to establish steady transit demand and financial sustainability by providing direct mass-transit access to Indore’s central business hubs.
