IUML Leader Bava Haji Faces FIR Over UAE Trip Offer for Votes

FIR Registered Against IUML Leader Over Alleged Vote-Buying Scheme

In a significant development, an FIR has been officially filed against Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) state vice-president Bava Haji for allegedly attempting to influence voters through improper incentives. The case centers on accusations that Haji offered a foreign trip to members of a booth committee in exchange for electoral performance.

Details of the Alleged Violation

According to police statements released on Sunday, the incident occurred during a political convention held on March 22 in Malappuram district. While campaigning for Congress candidate V S Joy in the Thavanur constituency, Bava Haji of Mangalam reportedly made a controversial announcement. He allegedly promised a 15-day trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for members of the United Democratic Front (UDF) booth committee that secures the highest number of votes in their area.

The Election Commission's intervention proved crucial in this matter. Representatives of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) first brought the issue to the Commission's attention, filing a formal complaint. After thorough examination, the Election Commission determined that Haji's offer constituted a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct, which strictly prohibits such inducements during elections.

Legal Action and Investigation

Acting on the Commission's specific direction, Tirur police have registered a formal case against Bava Haji. The FIR has been filed under relevant sections of both the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Representation of the People Act, indicating the seriousness of the alleged offense.

Police officials confirmed that Haji will be summoned for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators have also obtained video footage from the March 22 convention, which they believe contains evidence of the alleged announcement. This visual evidence is expected to play a key role in the probe.

Political Context in Thavanur Constituency

The Thavanur constituency features a competitive three-way contest. Congress leader V S Joy, whom Haji was campaigning for, faces opposition from LDF-backed independent candidate K T Jaleel and BJP candidate Ravi Thelath. This FIR adds a new layer of controversy to what was already a closely watched electoral battle.

This case highlights the ongoing vigilance of election authorities against practices that could undermine the integrity of the democratic process. The Model Code of Conduct exists precisely to prevent such attempts to influence voters through material incentives rather than political platforms.
