A devastating air ambulance crash in the dense forests of Jharkhand has resulted in the tragic loss of all seven people on board. The Redbird Airways Beechcraft C90 aircraft, operating a critical medical evacuation mission, went down in the remote Kasariya Panchayat area of Simariya block in Chatra district on Monday evening.
Victims Included Patient and Family Members
The fatal crash claimed the lives of two crew members, one patient, and the patient's family members who were accompanying them for urgent medical treatment. Officials confirmed that rescue teams reached the challenging, forested location and doctors pronounced all occupants dead at the site.
What began as a life-saving journey to Delhi's medical facilities ended in unimaginable disaster, leaving families shattered and communities across Jharkhand in mourning. The aircraft, registered as VT-AJV, had taken off from Ranchi at 19:11 IST on its medical evacuation flight to the national capital.
Radar Contact Lost During Weather Deviation
After being handed over from Ranchi air traffic control to the next station, the aircraft disappeared from radar screens. According to aviation authorities, the pilot had requested deviation due to deteriorating weather conditions after establishing contact with Kolkata ATC.
At precisely 19:34 IST, both communication and radar contact were lost approximately 100 nautical miles south-east of Varanasi. The aircraft failed to re-establish contact, triggering immediate emergency protocols and launching extensive search operations across the region.
Thunderstorm Likely Caused the Crash
Chatra Deputy Commissioner Keerthishree G stated that preliminary investigations suggest a thunderstorm likely caused the fatal crash. "Prima facie evidence points to adverse weather conditions as the probable cause," the official noted, while emphasizing that the exact reason will only be confirmed after comprehensive aviation investigations.
Detailed Investigation Underway
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has initiated a formal investigation into the tragic incident. A specialized team from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is being dispatched to the crash site with multiple objectives:
- Recover the flight data recorder (black box)
- Analyze all available flight data and communications
- Examine weather conditions during the flight
- Determine the exact sequence of events leading to the crash
Rescue Operations Hampered by Difficult Terrain
SP Sumit Kumar Agarwal revealed that authorities received initial information about the crash around 10 pm. Rescue operations faced significant challenges due to the remote location's rough terrain and dense forest surroundings. District emergency teams eventually reached the crash site and secured the area for investigation.
