JMM attacks Centre over exam lapses, demands Pradhan's removal

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the central government over alleged lapses in various examinations, including the CBSE on-screen marking (OSM) controversy, and demanded the immediate removal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

JMM Accuses Modi Government of Systemic Failures

JMM central general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya accused the Narendra Modi government of jeopardizing the fate of lakhs of students across the country due to its failed policies and lapses. He stated, "The country's education system is being pushed to the brink of collapse, even as the world advances in the era of artificial intelligence. Question paper leaks in NEET, irregularities in CBSE's new on-screen marking system, and confusion surrounding the CUET are testimonies to the Modi government's systemic failures over the year."

Impact on Students and Demand for Accountability

Referring to recent controversies, Bhattacharya claimed that lapses in examination processes have caused severe stress among students. "There are reports of many students dying by suicide. The agencies responsible for conducting exams, including the National Testing Agency (NTA), have failed to ensure transparency and accountability. The buck must stop with the education minister (Pradhan)," he said. The party also criticized the introduction of new education policies and mechanisms, alleging institutional interference and reduced academic autonomy. "We urge the Prime Minister to intervene, ensure transparency in the system, and take responsibility for the alleged lapses," Bhattacharya added.

Rajya Sabha Polls and Alliance Talks

When asked about the Rajya Sabha polls, for which the nomination process for two seats from Jharkhand began on Monday, Bhattacharya said that discussions are ongoing among alliance partners, and a decision will be announced soon. Meanwhile, members of the Congress student wing, NSUI, staged a protest outside Lok Bhavan demanding Pradhan's removal over the NEET-UG paper leak and controversies related to other exams.

BJP's Response

State BJP secretary Ganesh Mishra countered by saying that the state government should also address the serial leaks under Hemant Soren in recent years. "The Union government is sensitive toward students and is taking prompt action whenever irregularities come to light. CBSE officials have been transferred, and a probe has already been ordered," he added.
