Kanpur Women Unite in Support of Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam
Despite the Women's Reservation Bill not passing in Parliament, a significant gathering of women from various sections of society convened at the Naveen auditorium in Sarsaiya Ghat, Kanpur, to voice their unwavering support for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The assembly hailed the proposed legislation as a historic reform aimed at substantially boosting women's representation in governance structures across India.
Transformative Step for Democratic Values
During a joint press conference, speakers emphasized that the bill represents a transformative step toward strengthening democratic values by ensuring greater participation of women, who constitute nearly half of the country's population. Advocate and social activist Disha Arora described the bill as a significant move to address the historical underrepresentation of women in legislative bodies.
"Women have always possessed the capability, but their opportunities and participation have been limited," Arora stated. "With the provision of 33% reservation, women's voices will now find stronger expression in Parliament and State Assemblies, enabling them to play a more active role in policymaking." She also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating this crucial effort.
Evolving Role and Growing Self-Confidence
Social worker Subhashini Shivhare highlighted that the bill reflects the growing self-confidence and evolving role of women in society. "Earlier, women primarily discussed voting rights, but now they are stepping forward to assume leadership roles," she remarked. Shivhare added that increased female participation in decision-making would bring women-centric issues to the forefront, facilitating better resolution.
She acknowledged ongoing challenges, such as the "Pradhan Pati" phenomenon in rural areas, where male relatives often dominate elected women's roles, but noted that this trend is gradually changing as women increasingly assert independent leadership.
Empowerment and Rising Awareness
Preeti Singh, an associate professor at S.N. Sen Degree College, emphasized that the bill would further empower women to articulate their views effectively. She observed a noticeable rise in awareness among female students regarding such issues, with their perspectives gaining importance in academic and social discussions.
From Demographic Figure to Active Participant
Manpreet Kaur, a social activist working for people with disabilities, asserted that the legislation would ensure women are no longer viewed merely as a demographic figure but as active and empowered participants in governance. "Women have already demonstrated their leadership capabilities at the panchayat level, and this participation will now extend to larger platforms," she pointed out.

The speakers collectively affirmed that the constitutional provision would significantly enhance women's decision-making power and pave the way for more inclusive governance. They stressed that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is not just a legislative measure but a catalyst for societal change, promoting gender equality and robust democratic engagement.
