Karnataka: Holiday for Schools in Belagavi, Khanapur on July 7

The Deputy Commissioner of Belagavi announced on Monday that all anganwadis, schools, and pre-university (PU) colleges in Belagavi and Khanapur taluks will remain closed on July 7 due to heavy rainfall in the region. The decision was communicated via an official order late in the evening, citing safety concerns for students and staff.

Details of the Holiday Announcement

The holiday applies to all educational institutions under the state government, including anganwadi centers, primary and secondary schools, and PU colleges. Private institutions have also been advised to follow the directive. The Deputy Commissioner’s office stated that the measure is precautionary, as the India Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy downpours over the next 24 hours.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, the region has received over 120 mm of rainfall in the past 48 hours, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disruption of normal life. “The safety of children is our priority. We urge parents and school authorities to cooperate and ensure students stay indoors,” the official said in a statement.

Impact on Local Residents

Residents of Belagavi and Khanapur have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from flood-prone zones. The district administration has set up control rooms to monitor the situation and provide assistance. Emergency services, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been kept on standby.

This is not the first time the region has faced such disruptions. In July 2025, similar heavy rains had led to a week-long closure of schools in parts of Belagavi. The current spell has already caused damage to roads and crops, with farmers reporting losses in several villages.

Government Response

The Karnataka government has directed all district officials to remain vigilant and take necessary actions to prevent any untoward incidents. The Deputy Commissioner of Belagavi has also announced that a review meeting will be held on July 7 to assess the situation and decide on further steps.

As of Monday evening, no casualties have been reported, but the administration continues to monitor the weather closely. Residents are encouraged to report any emergencies to the district helpline number 1077.
