Former JD(U) Leader KC Tyagi Switches to RLD, Cites Nitish Kumar's Political Retreat
In a significant political development, former Janata Dal (United) MP KC Tyagi announced his departure from the party to join the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Tyagi attributed this move to what he described as an "apparent withdrawal" of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar from "active" state politics, prompting him to "return to his roots" in Uttar Pradesh.
Tyagi's Rationale: Nitish Kumar's Health and Political Speculation
Speaking to TOI, Tyagi elaborated on his decision, stating, "Nitish ji seems to be withdrawing himself from Bihar politics. He has also not been keeping well for some time now. It was time for me to go back to my roots in UP and strengthen RLD from where I started my political career." This statement came a day after he formally joined the RLD alongside his son, Amrish.
Nitish Kumar's recent election to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar has fueled widespread speculation about a potential leadership transition in the state. Adding to this, Tyagi allowed his JD(U) membership to lapse without seeking renewal last week, signaling his intent to shift allegiances.
A Long-Standing Association with Nitish Kumar and JD(U)
Tyagi has been a close associate of Nitish Kumar since the formation of the Janata Dal (United) in 2003, following the merger of the Janata Dal and Samata Party. Over the years, he served the JD(U) in key roles, including as its chief national spokesperson and national secretary general. More recently, he functioned as a political adviser after being removed as spokesperson in September 2024.
Despite his exit, Tyagi asserted that there were no ideological differences between the JD(U) and the RLD. He expressed his desire to work with the party led by Jayant Chaudhary, which he praised for consistently championing the cause of farmers. He highlighted that this focus aligns with the ideological frameworks of leaders such as former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, as well as socialist icons Ram Manohar Lohia and Karpoori Thakur.
Strategic Move to Counter INDIA Bloc in Western Uttar Pradesh
Tyagi further explained that the RLD is well-positioned to take on a "resurgent" Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress-led INDIA bloc. He claimed that this alliance has gained ground in several western Uttar Pradesh constituencies following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, including Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad, Sambhal, and Badaun.
Tyagi's Political Journey and Family Involvement
Tyagi began his political career with the Lok Dal, founded by Charan Singh in 1974. The party later evolved into the Janata Party and subsequently the Janata Dal, led by VP Singh. In 1989, he successfully contested the Lok Sabha election from Hapur on a Janata Dal ticket, defeating Congress's Budha Priya Maurya by a margin of over 33,000 votes.
However, his subsequent electoral attempts faced setbacks:
- In 1991, he lost to BJP's Ramesh Chandra Tomar.
- In 1996, he contested on an SP ticket but again lost to Tomar.
- In 2004, he contested on a JD(U) ticket from Meerut but lost to Mohammad Shahid of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
The JD(U) sent Tyagi to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar in 2013, where he served until July 2016. Speculation has been rife that Tyagi is seeking a Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh in the coming months.
His son, Amrish, has also moved to the RLD after joining the BJP in 2021, months before the 2022 assembly elections. Sources indicate that Amrish has been actively lobbying to enter state politics from Meerut, adding a familial dimension to this political shift.
RLD's Perspective: Gaining Experience and Strengthening Mission
RLD national secretary Anupam Mishra welcomed Tyagi's entry, emphasizing that the party stands to gain from his vast experience, unwavering dedication, and deep commitment to public service. Mishra stated, "Together, we are committed to moving forward with greater determination towards public welfare, empowering the farming community, and ensuring the holistic development of the state. His association will further strengthen our collective mission and reaffirm the party's steadfast commitment to serving the people."
This move underscores the dynamic nature of Indian politics, with leaders realigning based on regional strategies and personal convictions, potentially reshaping alliances in Uttar Pradesh ahead of future elections.
