Delhi Minister's 'Rahman Dakait' Remark Ignites Political Firestorm Over Bungalow Renovation
Delhi's Public Works Department minister and deputy chief minister, Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, ignited a significant political controversy on Wednesday by drawing a sharp comparison between former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and the fictional character 'Rahman Dakait' from the film 'Dhurandhar'. The incendiary remarks were made during a heated debate in the Delhi assembly, focusing on the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report concerning the extensive renovation of the official residence at 6, Flagstaff Road.
Allegations of Financial Impropriety and 'Sheesh Mahal' Tag
Verma explicitly stated, "Kejriwal was like Rahman Dakait who robbed public wealth," emphasizing that voters had decisively rejected such leadership in the 2025 assembly elections. The controversy revolves around the bungalow, which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has consistently labeled as "Sheesh Mahal," implying extravagant and unjustified spending.
The recently tabled CAG report highlighted a dramatic escalation in renovation costs, soaring from an initial estimate of approximately Rs 8 crore to a staggering final figure of Rs 33.66 crore. This substantial increase has raised serious questions regarding financial management and transparency in the project's execution.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's Strong Condemnation
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a forceful critique, alleging that while Delhi's residents faced severe hardships, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, the former chief minister was preoccupied with constructing a personal "mahal" for himself. She remarked in the assembly, "There is only one mahal in Delhi — the sheesh mahal — while the rest live in dharmshalas," underscoring a perceived disparity in priorities.
Gupta further pointed to procedural irregularities, claiming that multiple consultants were engaged for identical tasks and paid crores of rupees without adhering to proper tendering processes. She formally recommended that the CAG findings be forwarded to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Assembly for a comprehensive and detailed investigation.
Detailed Allegations of Extravagant Expenditure
During the assembly debate, Minister Verma presented an extensive list of items allegedly installed at the residence, which included:
- Luxury furniture and imported fittings
- Elaborate chandeliers and designer interior elements
- High-end gym equipment and multiple television sets
- Mini bars and sophisticated barbecue units
Verma characterized these findings as indicative of "serious lapses" in both construction practices and public expenditure, demanding accountability for the apparent mismanagement.
Aam Aadmi Party's Vigorous Defense and Counterattack
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which boycotted the budget session, responded with a robust defense. Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj accused the BJP of engaging in selective targeting, asserting that all details regarding the chief minister's residence were already publicly available.
Bharadwaj argued, "When Kejriwal's official residence was being renovated, the prime minister's residence was also being built. Every detail of the CM residence is public, but details of the PM’s residence are kept secret." He expressed the party's readiness for a fair and comprehensive debate on the matter.
In a pointed counter-allegation, Bharadwaj highlighted the BJP government's acquisition of a "VVIP boat" valued at over Rs 6 crore, questioning the moral authority behind criticizing the Rs 30-crore renovation. This retort aimed to shift focus onto the BJP's own expenditure decisions.
Political Implications and Future Scrutiny
The renovation of the bungalow emerged as a central political issue during the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, with the BJP effectively utilizing the "sheesh mahal" narrative to challenge AAP's governance. With the CAG report now slated for further examination by the PAC, the dispute is anticipated to intensify in the coming days, potentially influencing public perception and political discourse in the national capital.
The ongoing row underscores deeper tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition AAP, reflecting broader debates over transparency, fiscal responsibility, and the ethical use of public funds in urban governance.
