Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Monday declared that the state government would adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards violence and abuse against senior citizens, assuring that both the government and society would stand with the elderly at all times.

Inauguration of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Speaking after inaugurating the state-level observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, organized by the Social Justice Department at Jimmy George Indoor Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Satheesan said the government would take stringent action against those who mistreat, humiliate, or subject elderly persons to cruelty.

Pioneering Initiatives for Senior Citizens

The chief minister noted that Kerala was the first state in the country to establish a dedicated department exclusively for senior citizens, reflecting the importance accorded to their welfare. He said the government plans to implement the concept of a “silver economy” aimed at ensuring that senior citizens remain active participants in society, have opportunities to earn an income, and contribute meaningfully to social and economic activities.

Addressing Challenges of Migration

Referring to the growing migration of younger generations to foreign countries and other states for education and employment, Satheesan said society has a major responsibility to support and care for parents who are often left alone at home. The CM said the government would develop an extensive care system for senior citizens, including regular home visits and mechanisms to ensure access to food, medicines, and other essential services.

Budget and Future Plans

He also indicated that the upcoming state budget would include special schemes for the welfare of the elderly. He urged senior citizens to move forward with the confidence that they are never alone and that the government remains committed to their protection and well-being.

Vision for an Elderly-Friendly Society

Satheesan said Kerala should nurture a new generation that treats senior citizens with love, dignity, and respect, adding that a compassionate attitude towards the elderly is the hallmark of a civilized society. The government’s goal, he said, is to transform Kerala into the most elderly-friendly society in the country in the coming years.

Distribution of ‘Sneha Sandesham’ Card

During the function, the CM handed over the Social Justice Department’s ‘Sneha Sandesham’ card to Jagadamma, a resident of the Pulayanarkotta Old Age Home in Thiruvananthapuram.
