A significant political controversy has erupted in Kozhikode district, Kerala, following a contentious mike announcement from a Left Democratic Front (LDF) campaign vehicle in Perambra. The announcement, which referenced the term 'Kaumile Kutti' (where 'Kaum' in Arabic denotes persons belonging to Islam), has led to serious allegations of communal campaigning against the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate, Fathima Thahliya.
UDF Accuses LDF of Targeted Communal Politics
UDF leaders have vehemently condemned the incident, asserting that the LDF is deliberately conducting a divisive and communal campaign aimed at undermining Thahliya's candidacy. The announcement reportedly claimed that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) was running a covert operation to secure votes for Thahliya using the slogan 'Our votes for Kaumile Kutti'. This has been interpreted by UDF as an attempt to polarize voters along religious lines.
In response to the growing outcry, UDF election committee chairman K Balanarayanan formally lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission on Wednesday. Simultaneously, KSU general secretary Arjun Kattayattu filed a separate complaint with the Director General of Police (DGP), alleging that the LDF is resorting to unethical tactics by highlighting Thahliya's religion to influence the electorate.
LDF Denies Allegations, Offers Cooperation
LDF candidate and convener T P Ramakrishnan has categorically dismissed the accusations as baseless and unfounded. In a detailed statement, Ramakrishnan emphasized that the LDF campaign strictly focuses on the government's welfare schemes and development initiatives, with no room for communal rhetoric. "Our campaign announcements are centered on governance and progress. There is absolutely no communal campaign being run by us. We are fully prepared to cooperate with any investigation into this matter," he declared.
Ramakrishnan further clarified that explicit instructions have been issued to all party cadres to refrain from targeting rival candidates personally. He challenged the UDF's complaint, urging the police to conduct a thorough probe to ascertain the facts. However, Thahliya has countered this, alleging that the campaign against her was orchestrated with Ramakrishnan's knowledge, intensifying the political standoff.
Historical Context and IUML's Strong Reaction
This incident has drawn parallels to a previous controversy during the Lok Sabha elections in Vadakara, involving the 'kafir screenshot' campaign against UDF candidate Shafi Parambil. IUML national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty pointed out that the LDF appears to have learned nothing from that episode, which ultimately contributed to Parambil's victory. "They are repeating their mistakes. Just as the 'kafir' issue backfired, this 'Kaumile Kutti' announcement will also hurt the LDF. Our candidate's rising popularity has clearly unsettled them, leading to such desperate measures," Kunhalikutty asserted.
It is noteworthy that the 'kafir screenshot' was later exposed as fabricated and was initially circulated within social media groups linked to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Police investigations into that case are still ongoing, adding a layer of historical grievance to the current dispute.
Election Authorities Step In, Viral Video Fuels Controversy
The controversy gained momentum after a video of the mike announcement, recorded by Avala native Salil at Madathil Mukku, went viral across various social media platforms. Sources indicate that election authorities are likely to seek a formal explanation from Ramakrishnan and examine whether the incident constitutes a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Interestingly, the vehicle used for the announcement had reportedly obtained prior permission for campaigning, complicating the regulatory aspects of the case.
