Land Protest Persists Near Polling Station as Vypeen Records High Voter Turnout

In a striking juxtaposition of civic engagement, residents of Pallippuram in Kochi continued their protest against the Waqf board's claim over their land, even as voting proceeded just a kilometer away at St Joseph LP School in northeast Munambam. The demonstration, held at a tent opposite the Velankanni Matha Church, underscored the deep-seated local issues simmering beneath the surface of the electoral process.

Vypeen Constituency Sees Significant Rise in Voter Participation

The Vypeen constituency, which includes Munambam, witnessed a robust voter turnout of 80.5% as of 7 pm, marking a notable increase from the 75.84% recorded in previous elections. This surge in participation highlights the heightened political awareness and engagement among the electorate in the region.

Residents Lean Towards NDA Amid Unresolved Land Crisis

With major political fronts failing to provide a definitive solution to the land dispute, many residents in the area are reportedly planning to support the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the assembly polls. While this issue is not expected to have a widespread impact across the entire constituency, it has galvanized local sentiment. In the December local body elections, BJP candidate Kunjimon Augustine secured a historic victory in the Munambam Kadappuram ward of Pallippuram grama panchayat, where most affected families reside. He garnered 582 votes, defeating the CPM candidate by a margin of 31 votes.

This win marked a significant shift, as the region had never before elected a BJP candidate, with many of Kunjimon's supporters previously backing Congress or CPM.

NDA's Electoral Prospects Strengthen with Alliance

For the current assembly elections, the NDA candidate in Vypeen is Anitha Thomas from the Twenty20 party. In past elections when BJP and Twenty20 contested separately, they secured 16,540 and 13,385 votes, respectively. A rough estimate suggests that the alliance could now amass nearly 30,000 votes, bolstering their chances in the constituency.

Protesters Express Confidence in NDA Support

Shashi Muringathara, a protester at the tent, expressed confidence that all votes previously cast for the BJP in the local body polls would again favor the NDA candidate. However, Pradeep Munthandassery, another protester, noted challenges due to the late formation of the alliance. "Since the alliance was formed very late, the parties didn't get enough time to coordinate," said Pradeep, highlighting the logistical hurdles faced in consolidating support.

The ongoing protest and electoral dynamics in Vypeen reflect a complex interplay of local grievances and political realignments, shaping the outcome in this key constituency.
