A tragic incident unfolded in Kanpur on Saturday when a 24-year-old woman, identified as Ekta Singh, died by suicide at her residence in the Kalyanpur police station area. She was the daughter of a lawyer and was pursuing a Master of Library Science (M. Lib) course.
Sequence of events
According to her father, Chandra Prakash Singh, a resident of Purana Shivli Road, he left for court as usual on Saturday morning, while his wife, Laxmi Singh, went to the market to purchase medicines. Ekta was alone at home at that time. Family members revealed that a friend called Ekta in the afternoon, and the two had a lengthy conversation. Around 3 PM, the same friend called the father to inquire about his return time, as Ekta's phone was not being answered. The friend made several more calls to the parents afterward.
When the family returned home at approximately 6 PM, they found the main gate locked from the inside. After repeated knocking yielded no response, a neighbor was asked to climb over the wall to open the gate. Once inside, the family discovered Ekta hanging from a ceiling fan. The police were immediately notified.
Investigation and allegations
Police and a forensic team arrived at the scene, conducted an investigation, and sent the body for post-mortem examination. The student's mobile phone was taken into custody for further inquiry. During questioning, it emerged that a young man had allegedly been continuously harassing Ekta, causing her significant mental stress.
Inspector Santosh Kumar Singh stated, "The family has submitted a written complaint accusing a young man of harassment. After investigating the matter, necessary action will be taken." The police are currently examining the evidence and the phone records to ascertain the circumstances leading to the suicide.
