Kalaburagi: Eighteen sheep were killed in a lightning strike amid heavy wind and rain at Hebbal village in Kalagi taluk of Kalaburagi district on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm when shepherds Jagappa, Mallappa, and Dasaratha had taken their flock to the outskirts for grazing. Suddenly, rain began, accompanied by strong winds, and a lightning bolt struck the ground, killing 18 sheep instantly.
Over 250 sheep saved
Despite the tragic loss, more than 250 sheep were saved in the incident. The shepherds managed to protect the majority of their flock, but the financial impact was severe. The lightning strike caused losses worth lakhs of rupees to the affected herdsmen, who rely on sheep rearing for their livelihood.
Investigation and demands for compensation
Personnel from Madabul police station visited the spot after receiving information and conducted a thorough investigation. Villagers gathered at the site and demanded that the government provide appropriate compensation to the affected shepherds. They urged officials to visit the location and assess the damage. The incident highlights the vulnerability of rural communities to natural disasters and the need for timely support.
