NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha session on Thursday descended into a heated confrontation after Speaker Om Birla abruptly cut short the speech of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The interruption occurred when Gandhi targeted Oil and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, alleging his name appeared in the controversial Epstein files, and veered into broader discussions on India's energy security.
Rahul Gandhi Questions External Influence on Energy Policy
While addressing the energy crisis stemming from the ongoing Middle East conflict, Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp critique of India's energy relationships. He emphasized the critical importance of energy security as the foundation of any nation and questioned why New Delhi would permit external powers to dictate its oil and gas procurement strategies.
"The foundation of every single nation is its energy security. Allowing the United States to decide who we buy oil from, who we buy gas from, and whether we can buy oil from Russia or not," Gandhi stated during his speech.
He further argued, "Our relationship with different oil suppliers can be decided by us. This is what has been bartered. Why would a nation the size of India allow any other nation, the President of another nation, to give us permission to buy Russian oil or to decide who our relationships are with?" This commentary highlighted his concerns over perceived foreign interference in India's sovereign energy decisions.
Speaker Om Birla Enforces Parliamentary Rules
As Gandhi shifted focus to level allegations against Minister Hardeep Singh Puri regarding the Epstein files, Speaker Om Birla intervened. Birla reminded the House that Gandhi had been permitted to speak solely on the issue of gas shortage in the country, based on the notice he had submitted.
"I have a copy of the notice given by the Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi regarding the gas shortage in the country, and I allowed him to speak on that subject. However, despite being a responsible leader of the opposition, discussing other issues without notice is not within the procedures and rules of Parliament," Birla asserted.
He reiterated his stance, adding, "I am urging you again, and Parliament will not function this way. Parliament will function according to rules and procedures." This enforcement of parliamentary decorum underscored the ongoing tensions between the opposition and the chair.

This incident follows recent accusations from the opposition that Speaker Birla denied Rahul Gandhi adequate speaking time during the initial phase of the Budget session.
