Madurai: State government officials paid tribute to freedom fighter Viswanatha Das on his 140th birth anniversary on Tuesday.
Madurai district collector P Akash, accompanied by other officials, offered a floral tribute to his statue at the Viswanatha Das memorial house in Thirumangalam.
Viswanatha Das, a noted stage artist, was born to Subramani Pandithar and Gnanammal of Sivakasi in 1886. He later settled in Thirumangalam. Through his songs and dramas, he induced patriotic feelings among the public. He was imprisoned 29 times due to his activities for the Indian independence movement. The state government set up the memorial house to safeguard his legacy and has been celebrating his birth anniversary as a government function.
Viswanatha Das's contributions to the freedom struggle remain an inspiration for generations. His life story, marked by artistic expression and relentless activism, continues to be celebrated by the state government, which has ensured his legacy is preserved through the memorial house. The annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals for India's independence.
