Maharashtra Cabinet Greenlights Major Elevated Highway Project for Pune Industrial Belt
The state cabinet's infrastructure committee has given its crucial approval for the development of the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur elevated highway on NH 548D. This significant infrastructure initiative is specifically designed to alleviate chronic traffic congestion in Pune's bustling industrial belt while substantially enhancing regional connectivity across Maharashtra.
High-Level Meeting Chaired by Chief Minister Fadnavis
The proposal received formal clearance during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai earlier this week. Officials from the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) revealed that CM Fadnavis emphasized the urgent need to expand highway infrastructure to support industrial growth and ensure smoother, faster transportation throughout the state.
This focus is particularly critical for rapidly developing industrial corridors surrounding Pune, where traffic bottlenecks have become a major impediment to economic activity.
Detailed Project Plan and Implementation Model
Under the approved blueprint, the project will be executed in two distinct segments:
- The Talegaon–Chakan stretch will feature a modern four-lane elevated corridor complemented by a parallel four-lane at-grade road.
- The Chakan–Shikrapur segment will be upgraded into a four-lane at-grade highway.
The entire project will be developed under the DFBOT (design, finance, build, operate, and transfer) model. Transportation officials project that this new corridor will dramatically reduce travel times and streamline both freight logistics and daily commuter movement throughout this heavily industrialized region.
Citizen Advocacy and Committee Response
Local citizen groups have submitted numerous representations urging authorities to expedite highway widening due to daily traffic gridlock. The Traffic Free Chakan Action Committee welcomed the cabinet's decision, calling it a major step toward resolving long-standing congestion issues.
Committee representative Kunal Kad acknowledged their persistent advocacy for the project and requested an early joint meeting with the chief minister to accelerate implementation. "The chief minister had promised to address this issue following last year's agitation," Kad noted.
While the physical construction is expected to take approximately four years from work order issuance, Kad expressed concern about the lack of clarity regarding when the official work order will be issued. The committee also identified frequent transfers of key officials, including the PMRDA commissioner, as potential hurdles to effective coordination, stressing the need for stronger inter-departmental collaboration.
Strategic Importance and Project Specifications
The 53.2-kilometer Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur corridor holds strategic importance as it connects vital industrial zones while linking NH-48, the Pune–Shirur corridor, and multiple MIDC areas. Project requirements include approximately 56 hectares of land, with construction anticipated to span four years following the finalization of the executing agency.
Officials estimate completion around 2030. A primary objective involves separating industrial freight traffic from local commuter movement, providing much-needed relief to the Chakan industrial area—one of Maharashtra's largest automobile and manufacturing hubs that regularly experiences severe traffic bottlenecks.
Leadership Directives and Meeting Participants
Chief Minister Fadnavis directed officials to ensure quality execution and timely project completion. The meeting saw participation from Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar, Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, MSIDC Managing Director Brijesh Dixit, and numerous senior officials.
Additional Chief Secretary (PWD) Milind Mhaiskar delivered the comprehensive project presentation, outlining technical specifications and implementation timelines.
