Maharashtra Chief Minister Directs Scrutiny of Navi Mumbai Mobile Tower Project
In a significant development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has officially instructed the state's Urban Development Department (UDD) to conduct a thorough examination of numerous complaints regarding the contentious installation of mobile towers on road medians in the Ulwe node of Navi Mumbai. This directive marks the initiation of a formal administrative review into the controversial infrastructure project spearheaded by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco).
Resident Outcry Over Safety and Planning Concerns
Local residents and citizen advocacy groups have vehemently opposed the ongoing excavation and construction activities on road medians in Ulwe, which are intended to support new telecom infrastructure. The primary objections center around critical issues of public safety, potential traffic obstructions, inadequate civic planning, and a notable lack of transparency in the project's execution. The complaints have been formally escalated to Additional Chief Secretary Dr. KH Govinda Raj, who oversees UDD-II and is responsible for matters involving non-metropolitan civic bodies and municipal councils across Maharashtra.
Activist Representation Triggers CM's Intervention
The chief minister's proactive intervention was prompted by a detailed representation submitted by civil rights activist BN Kumar, who highlighted serious concerns about the erection of telecom towers on central medians in Ulwe and adjacent nodes within Navi Mumbai. Kumar emphasized that the CM's prompt response was substantive and directive, rather than a mere automated acknowledgment. "This was not an auto-generated mail," Kumar stated. "The matter has been specifically marked to the concerned senior officer of UDD for immediate action. Concurrently, citizen groups plan to utilize the Right to Information (RTI) Act to secure comprehensive details regarding permissions, safety clearances, structural approvals, and policy decisions associated with the mobile tower installations."
Local Leader Voices Community Opposition
Santosh Kate, a prominent local leader at the forefront of the protest movement, clarified that residents are not opposed to enhanced telecom services but strongly object to the methodology and location of the installations. "The Ulwe residents are not against improved telecom services, but strongly object to the manner in which mobile towers will be erected on road dividers without visible safeguards," Kate explained. "Mobile towers are necessary for communication services, but the way these structures are being installed shows little concern for public safety. Citizens will intensify the agitation if Cidco continues the work without ensuring public transparency and addressing our legitimate concerns."
The chief minister's directive is anticipated to catalyze a comprehensive administrative review of the approvals and procedural frameworks underpinning the Cidco project.
