Majuli District Administration Launches 'Deoraj' Mascot for Voter Awareness
The Majuli district administration has officially introduced "Deoraj," a mascot based on the migratory greylag goose, to lead its voter awareness campaign for the forthcoming elections. This initiative was unveiled during a ceremony at the Integrated DC’s Office under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme on Saturday.
Symbolism of the Greylag Goose in Electoral Participation
The campaign draws a parallel between the migratory birds' dedication to the riverine island district and citizens' responsibilities in the electoral process. Every winter, thousands of greylag geese travel vast distances to reach Majuli, enriching its biodiversity through breeding and symbolising a profound connection with the land. By selecting "Deoraj" as the mascot, the administration aims to foster a similar sense of belonging and duty among local voters.
Majuli district commissioner cum district election officer, Srishti Singh, emphasised the analogy, stating that just as these birds return to Majuli annually, voters must gather at polling stations to exercise their democratic rights. "The arrival of the greylag goose highlights Majuli's welcoming nature. We want every voter to feel that same attraction toward their polling stations. Deoraj embodies the spirit of participation," she explained.
Engaging the Youth and Tech-Savvy Population
To involve younger voters and the tech-savvy community, an appealing selfie point focused on election awareness was inaugurated during the event. This interactive feature is designed to make voter education more accessible and engaging, encouraging broader participation through modern means.
The "Deoraj" mascot initiative represents a creative approach to enhancing voter turnout and civic engagement in Majuli, leveraging local natural symbols to inspire electoral responsibility.
