West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of murdering democracy after Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kalyan Banerjee was injured in an attack. The incident occurred just a day after another TMC leader, Abhishek Banerjee, was allegedly assaulted by BJP supporters. The TMC, which recently lost power to the BJP in the state, has decided to launch an agitation on Monday to protest these attacks.
Mamata's Allegations
In a strongly worded statement on social media, Mamata Banerjee wrote, 'Yesterday, BJP supporters brutally attacked and lynched Lok Sabha Floor Leader Abhishek Banerjee. The terrifying videos are in the public domain. Today, our Chief Whip in Lok Sabha, Kalyan Banerjee was also a victim of a planned BJP attack. BJP is murdering democracy.' She shared a link to a video of the incident, further escalating the war of words between the two parties.
Background of the Attacks
The TMC has been at the helm of West Bengal for over a decade but lost power to the BJP a few weeks back. Since then, political tensions have escalated, with both sides accusing each other of violence and intimidation. The attack on Abhishek Banerjee, the TMC's Lok Sabha floor leader, was widely condemned by party workers. The subsequent attack on Kalyan Banerjee, the party's chief whip in the Lok Sabha, has added fuel to the fire.
TMC's Planned Agitation
In response to these attacks, the TMC has announced a protest agitation on Monday. The party is expected to mobilize its supporters across the state to demand action against the perpetrators. Party leaders have called for a peaceful demonstration, but the atmosphere remains charged. The TMC has also demanded a thorough investigation into both incidents and has accused the state police of inaction.
Political Reactions
The BJP has denied any involvement in the attacks, calling Mamata's allegations baseless. BJP spokespersons have accused the TMC of resorting to violence to regain political ground. Meanwhile, other opposition parties have expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal. The central government has not yet commented on the matter, but the incident is likely to be raised in Parliament.
As the state braces for the TMC's agitation, all eyes are on how the BJP-led state government handles the situation. The attacks have once again highlighted the deep political divide in West Bengal, with democracy and safety becoming central issues in the ongoing power struggle.
