Mamata Banerjee Delivers Fiery Response to PM Modi's Criticism
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a strongly worded rebuttal on Sunday to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent criticism of opposition parties, including her own Trinamool Congress (TMC), regarding the stalled women's reservation legislation. In a comprehensive social media statement, the veteran politician accused the Prime Minister of deliberately misleading the country instead of engaging in honest dialogue about the substantive concerns surrounding the bill.
Defending TMC's Record on Women's Representation
"It is deeply unfortunate that the Prime Minister chose to mislead the nation rather than address it honestly," Banerjee declared in her message. She vigorously defended her party's commitment to gender equality in politics, highlighting that the Trinamool Congress consistently maintains one of the highest proportions of women representatives in both Parliament and the West Bengal state legislature.
"The question of opposing women's reservation does not arise and never has," she asserted unequivocally, countering the Prime Minister's insinuations that opposition parties were obstructing women's empowerment through political maneuvering.
Core Opposition to Delimitation Exercise
However, Banerjee clarified a crucial distinction in her party's position. The TMC leader made it explicitly clear that while her party supports women's reservation in principle, they fundamentally oppose the proposed delimitation exercise that the Modi government seeks to implement alongside it.
"What we are fundamentally opposed to is the delimitation exercise that the Modi government was plotting to push through by using women as a shield for its vested political agenda," she wrote with pointed criticism.
Banerjee characterized this approach as "an assault on federal democracy" that would potentially alter constitutional structures, vowing that "we will not watch it happen in silence." She questioned the government's timing and motives, asking why implementation was delayed after the bill's passage in September 2023 and why it was being inextricably linked to the contentious delimitation process.
Direct Challenge to Parliamentary Protocol
The West Bengal Chief Minister also launched a personal critique of Prime Minister Modi's communication methods, challenging him to address such significant national matters directly within Parliament rather than through broadcast addresses to the nation.
"The next time you address the nation, have the courage to do so from the floor of Parliament," she wrote, describing his recent remarks as "cowardly, hypocritical and fork-tongued."
In a particularly sharp passage, Banerjee suggested political desperation: "What you did yesterday was cowardly, hypocritical and fork-tongued. You can feel power slipping through your fingers. And you are prepared to go to any extent to hold on for just a little while longer."
Context of PM Modi's Original Remarks
Banerjee's forceful response came directly after Prime Minister Modi's Saturday night address to the nation, in which he blamed opposition parties for blocking the women's reservation legislation. The Prime Minister had drawn a contrast between his government's priorities and those of opposition parties.
"For us, national interest comes first. But for some people, when party interest becomes everything, then women's empowerment and the nation's interest suffer," Modi stated during his broadcast. He specifically named several opposition parties, asserting that "the selfish politics of parties like Congress, DMK, TMC and SP has cost the women of this country."
This exchange highlights the deepening political divisions surrounding one of India's most significant proposed legislative reforms concerning gender representation in elected bodies, with both sides accusing the other of political gamesmanship at the expense of women's political empowerment.
