Mamata Banerjee Accuses PM Modi of Misleading Nation on Women's Reservation Bill
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, describing his recent statements on the women's reservation bill as "deeply unfortunate" and accusing him of attempting to "mislead the nation" rather than addressing the issue honestly.
Allegations of Using Women as Political Shield
In a detailed message posted on social media platform X, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader alleged that the central government was plotting to push through a delimitation exercise "by using women as a shield" for its vested political interests. Her remarks came just one day after legislation to implement 33 percent women's reservation in legislatures by 2029 was defeated in the Lok Sabha.
"What we are fundamentally opposed to is the delimitation exercise that the Modi government was plotting to push through by using women as a shield for its vested political agenda," Banerjee asserted in her strongly-worded statement.
Timing and Federal Balance Concerns
The West Bengal chief minister questioned the government's timing, asking why it had waited nearly three years after the Women's Reservation Bill was passed on September 28, 2023, and why it was being rushed when several states were in election cycles.
"If this government was genuinely serious about this noble cause, why rush it through when several states are in election? And why couple it with delimitation?" she demanded.
Banerjee further accused the Centre of attempting to alter the federal balance through delimitation, calling it an "assault on federal democracy" that could lead to "gerrymandering" favoring BJP-ruled states.
TMC's Record on Women's Representation
Defending her party's position, Mamata Banerjee highlighted that the TMC has consistently supported higher political representation for women and currently boasts the highest proportion of female elected representatives in both Parliament and state legislatures.
- 37.9 percent of TMC's elected members in the Lok Sabha are women
- 46 percent women members nominated in the Rajya Sabha
- Strong track record of women's empowerment initiatives
"The Trinamool Congress has always supported higher political representation for women," she stated, adding that while opposition to women's reservation doesn't arise, her party remains firmly against the proposed delimitation exercise.
Direct Challenge to Prime Minister
Taking a direct swipe at the Prime Minister, Banerjee called his remarks "cowardly, hypocritical and fork-tongued" and challenged him to address such matters from the floor of Parliament rather than through public addresses.
"And Mr. Prime Minister, the next time you address the nation, have the courage to do so from the Floor of Parliament, where you are subject to scrutiny, challenge and accountability," she declared.
Her comments followed Prime Minister Modi's address to the nation on Saturday, where he warned the Congress and its allies that Indian women would "severely punish them" for what he termed the "sin of foeticide."
Broader Political Context
The political confrontation comes amid ongoing debates about women's political representation and electoral reforms in India. Banerjee emphasized that while her party would continue to champion women's empowerment, it would not accept being "lectured on the subject" by political opponents.
The exchange highlights deepening political divisions over both the substance and timing of electoral reforms, with opposition parties questioning the government's motives and methods in implementing significant legislative changes.
