Medha Patkar Stands with Kanwar Wetland Communities in Begusarai
In a significant show of solidarity, renowned social activist Medha Patkar visited the Kanwar wetland bird sanctuary area in Manjhaul, Begusarai, on Friday. Her visit aimed to meet with families from the Musahar and fishermen communities who are facing the threat of displacement due to an ongoing development project at the sanctuary.
Addressing Concerns at Local Meeting
Patkar addressed a gathering organized by the local Mushar Basti Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, where she highlighted the critical issues at stake. She pointed out that the Kanwar wetland, recognized as a Ramsar site of international environmental importance, has long been a model of natural coexistence between humans and nature.
"Any move to displace the Musahar and fishermen families from their ancestral habitat is completely unjustified," Patkar asserted. "These communities have lived here for generations, relying on the wetland for their livelihood."
Legal and Social Implications of Displacement
Emphasizing legal safeguards, Patkar referenced the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, which requires the participation of local gram sabhas before such projects proceed. She warned that rehabilitation efforts often fall short, leading to widespread discontent and social conflicts.
"Rehabilitation after displacement is not a simple process; it frequently results in serious issues like confrontation and hardship," she explained.
Balancing Ecology and Livelihoods
Patkar stressed the delicate balance between environmental preservation and the rights of marginalized communities. While acknowledging the government's duty to protect the environment, she insisted it must also safeguard the poor and deprived.
"The government cannot violate your rights," she told the assembled families, urging them to remain united and non-violent in their protests.
Community Voices and Additional Challenges
Affected families shared their concerns with Patkar, revealing that the project includes plans to relocate a local school, which would further disrupt their children's education. This adds to the existing hardships faced by these communities.
Call to Action for Government
Before departing for Delhi, Patkar, known for her leadership in the Narmada Bachao movement, called on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to ensure a proper and dignified life for the Musahar and fishermen communities. She highlighted that these groups remain among the most deprived in society and deserve protection from unjust displacement.
The visit underscores ongoing tensions between development initiatives and the rights of indigenous populations, setting the stage for continued advocacy in the region.
