MoD Signs Rs 975 Crore Contract for TRAWL Assembly to Boost Tank Mine-Sweeping Capabilities
In a significant move to bolster India's defence infrastructure, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed contracts worth approximately Rs 975 crore with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Private Limited. The deal, finalized on Tuesday, focuses on the procurement of TRAWL Assembly for T-72 and T-90 tanks, marking a pivotal step in enhancing the Indian Army's operational effectiveness.
Enhancing Minefield Breaching Capabilities
According to an official MoD press release, the TRAWL Assembly is a critical equipment developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This advanced system is designed to significantly improve the minefield breaching capability of the Indian Army. By creating vehicle-safe lanes through minefields equipped with anti-tank mines fitted with proximity magnetic fuses, the TRAWL Assembly will enable safer and more efficient manoeuvres for armoured units during combat operations.
The contract signing ceremony was held in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, underscoring the strategic importance of this procurement. This initiative is part of the broader Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category, which aligns with the government's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). By empowering indigenous industries, this deal not only modernises defence capabilities but also fosters domestic manufacturing and technological innovation.
Recent Defence Procurement Initiatives
This latest contract follows a series of recent defence acquisitions by the MoD, highlighting a sustained push towards military modernisation. In March, separate agreements were signed for the Indian Coast Guard and the Navy:
- A Rs 5,083 crore contract for six Advanced Light Helicopters ALH Mk-II for the Coast Guard.
- A Rs 2,901 crore deal for Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch Shtil missiles for the Navy.
Additionally, in February, the ministry entered into a Rs 2,312 crore agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's Transport Aircraft Division in Kanpur. This deal involved the acquisition of eight Dornier 228 aircraft along with operational role equipment for the Coast Guard, also under the Buy (Indian) category.
