Chandipur (East Midnapore): Hasirani Rath, the 65-year-old mother of Chandranath Rath — Suvendu Adhikari's aide who was shot dead by bike-borne assailants late Wednesday night — alleged on Thursday that her son was killed as revenge for Adhikari's performance against Mamata Banerjee in Bhowanipore.
Allegations of Revenge
"I believe he was on their radar for a long time. By killing my son, Trinamool has taken revenge for Suvendubabu's performance against Mamata Banerjee," said Hasirani, a former BJP panchayat samiti member. Chandranath had been expected home on Thursday for his cousin's wedding. Instead, his body returned — and the wedding was postponed.
Final Moments
Hours before his death, Hasirani and her brother Koushik Das had visited him at a guesthouse in Chandipur, bringing a home-cooked meal they shared together. His father had passed away recently, and family members said Chandranath made a point of spending time with his mother whenever work brought him to East Midnapore.
Demand for Justice
"As a mother, I can't seek death for anyone. But I demand life imprisonment for those guilty," Hasirani said. She accused Trinamool leaders of making provocative statements ahead of the results. "Those who were saying ‘fathers from Delhi' would not be able to save us after May 4 have shown their true colours," she said.
Political Background
Hasirani was originally with Trinamool before switching to BJP when Adhikari defected — a shift the rest of the family followed. The incident has sparked political tensions in the region, with opposition parties demanding a thorough investigation.
