MP Beniwal Slams Power Line Expansion on Rajasthan Farmlands

MP Beniwal Condemns Unregulated Power Line Expansion in Rajasthan

Barmer MP Ummedaram Beniwal sounded an urgent alarm in the Lok Sabha on Friday, highlighting the rapid and unregulated expansion of power transmission lines across the agricultural lands of Rajasthan. During the Zero Hour session, he called upon the central government to immediately halt what he termed an "injustice" against farmers and to ensure they receive fair compensation for their land.

Surge in Solar Projects Drives Transmission Line Growth

Beniwal pointed to the significant increase in large-scale solar energy projects in border districts such as Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Bikaner. This development has spurred aggressive expansion of transmission infrastructure by both private and state-owned companies, including major players like Powergrid and Starlight. He emphasized that this expansion is occurring without proper oversight, leading to widespread concerns among the farming community.

Compensation Based on Official Rates Deemed Unjust

The MP argued that the current compensation system for farmers is severely flawed. Compensation is being calculated based on official government rates, known as District Level Committee (DLC) rates, which are substantially lower than the actual market value of the land. Beniwal stated that this discrepancy results in heavy financial losses for farmers, exacerbating a livelihood crisis in these regions. He urged for a revision to ensure payments reflect true market conditions.

Health and Safety Risks from Negligent Line Placement

Condemning the "arbitrariness and negligence" of the companies involved and local administration, Beniwal noted that transmission lines are being laid through sensitive areas without permission. These include residential settlements, known as dhanis, school grounds, and water bodies. He warned that such practices pose severe health and safety risks to residents, particularly children, due to potential electromagnetic exposure and physical hazards.

Key Issues Raised by Beniwal:
  • Unregulated expansion of power transmission lines on farmlands.
  • Inadequate compensation based on DLC rates versus market value.
  • Placement of lines near residential areas and schools without consent.
  • Call for central government intervention to address farmer grievances.

Beniwal's remarks underscore growing tensions between infrastructure development and agricultural rights in Rajasthan, urging prompt action to balance progress with farmer welfare.
