Madhya Pradesh Congress leaders were detained in Delhi on Thursday as they attempted to march to the Rashtrapati Bhavan to protest against what they termed 'seat chori' (theft of seats). The demonstration came after their request for a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu was turned down.
Protest Over Alleged Seat Theft
The Congress leaders, including several senior party members from Madhya Pradesh, gathered near the Rashtrapati Bhavan to highlight their grievances regarding the alleged manipulation of parliamentary seats. They accused the ruling party of undermining democratic processes through unfair seat allocations.
Detention by Delhi Police
Delhi Police intervened and detained the protesters, citing violations of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which prohibits unlawful assembly. The leaders were taken to a nearby police station for questioning before being released later in the day.
Congress spokesperson Achal Gunjal stated, 'Our leaders were peacefully exercising their democratic right to protest. The denial of a meeting with the President and the subsequent detention show the government's intolerance towards dissent.'
The Madhya Pradesh Congress unit has planned further protests across the state, demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged seat theft and a meeting with the President to discuss the matter.
