A 35-year-old man in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district allegedly cut off a part of his genitals with an axe to 'end sexual desire', police said on Friday. The incident took place on Thursday evening in a village under the Nowgong police station area.
Incident details
The man, identified as Rammilan Yadav, a resident of Barhata village, went to a field near his house and used an axe to sever a part of his genitals. According to family members, Yadav took the step near a well close to his field. After sustaining serious injuries, he called his cousin for help. The cousin rushed him to a community health centre in Nowgong, from where he was referred to a district hospital in Chhatarpur.
Medical condition
Doctors said Yadav's condition is stable and he is out of danger. 'He has been admitted to the district hospital and is recovering. There is no threat to his life,' a doctor said. Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. Preliminary inquiries suggest Yadav was under some mental stress and took the extreme step impulsively. No suicide note has been found.
The incident has shocked the local community. Neighbours said Yadav was a quiet man and did not show any signs of distress earlier. 'We are surprised by what happened. He never shared any problems with us,' a neighbour said.
Police have also spoken to family members to ascertain the exact reason behind the act. 'We are investigating all angles. The man's family has been cooperative. We are also looking into whether he was suffering from any mental health issues,' a police officer said.
This is a rare case of self-mutilation in the region. Medical experts say such acts are often linked to severe psychological distress or disorders. 'Self-harm of this nature is uncommon and indicates deep-seated mental health issues. It is important for people to seek help if they experience such thoughts,' a psychiatrist said.
