Heavy rainfall pounded the Mumbai-Pune belt, leading to the closure of schools in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) and Pune district on Monday. The decision was taken by local authorities in view of the severe weather conditions.
School Closures Across MMR and Pune
Schools will remain shut on Monday in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR), which includes Mumbai and the neighbouring districts of Palghar, Thane and Raigad, as well as the Pune district. The announcement was made by district administrations following a review of the weather situation.
Impact of Heavy Rains
The downpour caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas, disrupting traffic on major roads and highways. Commuters faced delays as trains and buses ran behind schedule. Authorities urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary and avoid flooded areas.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the region received over 100 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, with more heavy showers expected in the coming days. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas, warning of continued heavy rainfall.
Government Advisory
State disaster management officials advised people to stay away from coastal areas and avoid venturing into waterlogged zones. Emergency services have been put on high alert, and rescue teams are stationed in vulnerable locations.
“We are monitoring the situation closely. Citizens are advised to follow safety guidelines and avoid unnecessary travel,” said a spokesperson for the Maharashtra government.
