At least 13 people have been killed in rain-related incidents across Mumbai, a minister confirmed on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for heavy rains over the next two days, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the city and surrounding areas.
Details of the Casualties
The fatalities occurred due to wall collapses, drowning, and electrocution as torrential rains lashed the city since Sunday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that most incidents took place in low-lying areas and slum clusters. Rescue operations are underway, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed in affected zones.
Government Response and Measures
Maharashtra's Relief and Rehabilitation Minister stated, "We are monitoring the situation closely. All emergency services are on high alert. The IMD's red alert indicates the possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, and we urge citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel." The state government has also closed schools and colleges in Mumbai and neighboring districts as a precautionary measure.
Impact on Daily Life
Heavy rains have disrupted train services, with several local trains delayed or cancelled. Roads in many parts of the city are waterlogged, causing traffic jams. The BMC has deployed pumps to drain water from low-lying areas. Power outages have been reported in some neighborhoods due to safety precautions.
Weather Forecast and Advisory
The IMD has predicted continued heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours. A 'red' alert means that authorities should take immediate action to prevent loss of life. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Maharashtra coast. The minister added, "We have enough resources to handle the situation, but public cooperation is essential."
