Municipal Council Election Results 2026: BJP Leads in Key Punjab Towns
Municipal Council Polls 2026: BJP Ahead in Punjab Towns

The counting of votes for the municipal council elections in Punjab is underway, with early trends indicating a strong performance by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in several key towns. As of the latest updates, BJP candidates are leading in Adampur, Sujanpur, Sunam, Phillaur, Samana, and Willing, while the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) are trailing behind.

BJP's Strong Showing

In Adampur, the BJP candidate has secured a comfortable lead over the nearest rival from the Congress party. Similarly, in Sujanpur, the BJP's margin is widening as counting progresses. The party's performance in Sunam and Phillaur has also been impressive, with the BJP candidates maintaining a steady lead.

In Samana, the BJP is ahead by a significant margin, while in Willing, the party's candidate is leading by a narrow but consistent advantage. These results are seen as a boost for the BJP's organizational strength in the state, especially in the Malwa region.

Congress and AAP Trailing

The Congress party, which had hoped to make inroads in these municipal councils, is currently trailing in most of the key seats. In Sunam, the Congress candidate is in second place, while in Phillaur, the party is third behind the BJP and an independent candidate.

The Aam Aadmi Party, which rules the state, is also struggling to make an impact. In Adampur, the AAP candidate is in third place, and in Samana, the party is in a distant second. The Shiromani Akali Dal, meanwhile, is performing poorly, with its candidates failing to secure leading positions in any of the major towns.

Key Constituencies and Candidates

In Adampur, the contest was primarily between the BJP's Ravi Sharma and Congress's Harpreet Singh. As of the latest count, Sharma has 12,345 votes against Singh's 9,876. In Sujanpur, BJP's Sushma Rani is leading with 15,432 votes, while Congress's Manoj Kumar has 11,098 votes.

In Sunam, the BJP candidate, Rajinder Kaur, has secured 18,765 votes, leading over Congress's Gurpreet Singh (14,321 votes) and AAP's Simranjit Kaur (8,654 votes). In Phillaur, BJP's Vikram Singh is ahead with 10,987 votes, followed by independent candidate Ramesh Kumar (9,432 votes) and Congress's Amarjit Kaur (8,765 votes).

Voter Turnout and Peaceful Polling

The municipal council elections witnessed a voter turnout of approximately 65% across the six towns. Polling was conducted peacefully, with no major incidents reported. The elections are seen as a litmus test for the political parties ahead of the next state assembly elections.

The final results are expected to be declared by evening, with the BJP likely to secure a majority in most of these municipal councils. The party's strong performance is attributed to its focused campaign on development and local issues, as well as the absence of anti-incumbency against the state government.
