Pre-Poll Violence Claims Life in Nagaland's Koridang Constituency
DIMAPUR: One person has tragically lost his life in pre-poll violence that erupted at Longkhum village in the Koridang assembly constituency under Mokokchung district. The fatal incident occurred following a violent clash between supporters of rival candidates late on Sunday night, casting a dark shadow over the upcoming electoral process.
Condemnation from Deputy Chief Minister
Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, who also holds the crucial home portfolio, has issued a strong condemnation of the death of Imrongsungba Imchen in the pre-poll violence. Patton expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Imchen, who succumbed to his injuries while being urgently referred for advanced medical treatment.
"Violence has absolutely no place in a democratic process," Patton stated emphatically. "Elections must remain a platform for the peaceful expression of the people's will and should never become a source of fear, anger, or division within our society."
The Deputy CM further emphasized that such violent incidents severely weaken public trust in democratic institutions and disturb the essential sense of unity among communities. He issued a heartfelt appeal to all citizens of the Koridang constituency, regardless of political affiliations, to remain calm and exercise maximum restraint during this tense period.
Immediate Night Curfew Imposed
In response to the escalating situation, Mokokchung District Magistrate Ajit Kumar Verma has imposed a strict night curfew with immediate effect. The curfew will remain in force from 6 PM to 6 AM daily until further official orders are issued.
The curfew applies specifically within the jurisdiction of Longkhum village, Mangmetonq village, and the Alichen area, including the 2 NAP camp, all located under the Koridang constituency. This decisive measure comes as polling for the crucial bye-election in the constituency is scheduled to take place on April 9.
In his official order, Verma cited a clear and present likelihood of breach of public peace and tranquility within these specified areas. He warned that the prevailing situation poses a genuine danger to human life and property, necessitating immediate preventive action.
Legal Basis for the Curfew Order
The District Magistrate's decision was based on detailed reports received from Mokokchung sector magistrates and the Senior Superintendent of Police. After careful examination of the prevailing law and order situation, authorities determined that immediate preventive measures were absolutely necessary.
"These measures are essential to prevent any further breach to public peace and tranquility and to ensure the maintenance of public order within the jurisdiction of Longkhum village, Mangmetong village, and Alichen area," Verma explained in his order.
The curfew order strictly prohibits the assembly of five or more persons within the designated areas. However, important exemptions have been granted to police personnel, armed forces, security personnel, magistrates, government officials on official or election duty, medical personnel, ambulances, emergency services, and individuals engaged in essential services.
Considering the extreme urgency of the matter, the order has been passed ex parte, highlighting the critical nature of the security situation. The authorities are taking all possible steps to ensure that the upcoming bye-election proceeds in a peaceful, orderly, and democratic manner, free from further violence or intimidation.
