Nagpur Mayor Slams Congress for Blocking Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament
Nagpur Mayor Neeta Thakre launched a sharp attack on the Congress party and other opposition groups on Tuesday, accusing them of deliberately blocking the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament. Thakre stated that this opposition has exposed the 'real face' of these political parties regarding their commitment to women's rights and empowerment.
Press Conference Allegations Against Opposition Parties
Addressing a press conference in Nagpur, Mayor Thakre detailed how the 'Nari Shakti Vandan 2026' Bill, which proposed a 33% reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, failed to secure passage due to concerted opposition from the Congress and its allied parties. She emphasized that this legislative setback represents a significant missed opportunity for women across India to gain proper representation in the nation's highest legislative bodies.
Thakre argued that by opposing this crucial legislation, the Congress party has effectively 'snatched away' the fundamental right of women to participate equally in the democratic process. She stressed that women possess a unique understanding of ground-level problems and community issues, and their increased presence in Parliament and state assemblies would have substantially strengthened governance and policy-making across the country.
Criticism of Women MPs and Opposition Leadership
The Nagpur Mayor did not spare women Members of Parliament from opposition parties either, criticizing them for failing to effectively present and advocate for women's concerns during parliamentary sessions. Thakre pointed out the apparent contradiction in opposition leaders publicly claiming to support women's rights while being unable to ensure the passage of this landmark bill that would have translated those claims into concrete legislative action.
'This failure to pass the Women's Reservation Bill denies women across India the crucial opportunity to raise issues affecting common citizens in our legislatures,' Thakre stated during her press conference. She highlighted how women's perspectives are essential for comprehensive governance that addresses the needs of all segments of society.
Highlighting BJP's Record on Women's Empowerment
In contrast to her criticism of opposition parties, Mayor Thakre highlighted the Bharatiya Janata Party's track record on women's empowerment. She noted that the BJP has consistently given significant responsibilities to women at the municipal and local governance levels, reflecting what she described as the party's genuine commitment to advancing women's participation in public life.
Thakre emphasized that the BJP continues to prioritize and actively promote women's involvement in governance structures at all levels. She presented this as evidence of her party's substantive approach to women's empowerment, contrasting it with what she characterized as the opposition's rhetorical support that fails to materialize into actual legislative achievements.
The controversy surrounding the Women's Reservation Bill has now become a significant point of political contention, with Mayor Thakre's statements adding fuel to the ongoing debate about women's representation in Indian politics. The failure to pass this legislation has sparked discussions about the genuine commitment of various political parties to gender equality in legislative bodies.
