Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has asserted that the proposed women's reservation legislation and the upcoming constituency delimitation exercise will bring about significant changes to the country's political landscape. Speaking to the media at NTR Bhavan in Vijayawada, Naidu emphasized that these two issues should not be viewed in isolation and reiterated the Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) long-standing commitment to women's empowerment.
Women's Reservation: A Long-Standing Demand
Naidu highlighted that the 33% reservation for women in legislatures, championed by the TDP, has already become a major topic of discussion in national politics. He expressed confidence that the opinions of those who had opposed such reforms in the past could change in the current political environment. The Chief Minister noted that the TDP has consistently advocated for greater representation of women in decision-making bodies.
Delimitation Challenges for Andhra Pradesh
Referring to the proposed delimitation of constituencies, Naidu observed that Andhra Pradesh could face challenges whether the exercise is based on the 2011 Census or the latest population figures. However, he maintained that no state would suffer if the existing number of seats were increased by 50%. According to him, the Centre is determined to move forward on both the women's reservation and constituency reorganisation measures.
Sharp Attack on YSR Congress Party
The Chief Minister also launched a sharp attack on former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's family and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). He alleged that growing public frustration with the party was evident and that people had begun identifying it as the "Kodi Kathi Party." Naidu said several developments related to the YSR family were coming to light and argued that such trends were unhealthy for democracy.
Support for YS Sunitha Reddy in Murder Case
Commenting on the murder case of former minister YS Vivekananda Reddy, Naidu expressed support for YS Sunitha Reddy and her legal battle. He said she had every right to know who was responsible for her father's death and noted that her persistence had kept the case alive. Naidu's remarks come amid ongoing investigations into the high-profile murder.
Meeting with Party Leaders
Earlier, Naidu met several senior party leaders at NTR Bhavan. Leaders including Varla Ramaiah, Kambhampati Rammohan Rao, and Reddappagari Srinivasa Reddy reportedly urged the TDP chief to consider them for upcoming Rajya Sabha opportunities. The meeting underscores the party's preparations for the biennial elections to the upper house of Parliament.
In his address, Naidu reiterated the TDP's commitment to social justice and inclusive development. He called upon party workers to remain united and focused on the welfare of the people. The Chief Minister's statements are expected to set the tone for the party's strategy in the coming months, especially with the general elections approaching.
