Nashik's 2027 Kumbh Mela Aims for 12 Crore Devotees

Nashik Braces for Historic 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela with 12 Crore Devotee Projection

The upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Nashik, scheduled for 2027, is projected to attract an astonishing footfall of over 12 crore devotees, presenting monumental challenges for local and state authorities. This figure marks a dramatic increase from the 2.5 crore pilgrims who visited during the previous Kumbh Mela in 2015, highlighting the scale of preparations required.

Intensified Preparations with Tight Timelines

With less than 15 months remaining until the flag-hoisting ceremony on October 31 this year, which formally inaugurates the event, civic and state agencies have ramped up their efforts. The three major Amrit Snaan (holy bath) dates are set between August and September 2027, creating a compressed preparation window that demands swift execution of key projects.

Officials from the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA) have emphasized that all planning aspects are being tailored to accommodate the expected 12 crore devotees. NTKMA commissioner Shekhar Singh stated, "Preparations are being made keeping this scale in mind. The focus is on strengthening road infrastructure, improving traffic and mobility arrangements, redevelopment and expansion of ghats, sanitation, water supply, and other essential facilities."

Massive Infrastructure Investments Underway

To manage the unprecedented crowds, Kumbh-related works worth over Rs 20,000 crore are currently in progress across Nashik and its adjoining areas. Key infrastructure projects include:

  • Development of at least 29 major roads at a total cost of Rs 1,270 crore.
  • Construction of six new bridges over the Godavari and Nandini rivers for approximately Rs 150 crore.
  • The tendering process for these projects has been completed, with work orders issued and construction already underway in several stretches by the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC).

One of the most significant initiatives is the 65-kilometer-long outer ring road encircling Nashik, being developed by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) at an estimated cost of Rs 7,922 crore. This project aims to ease traffic flow during the Kumbh Mela and divert vehicles away from the city center, with costs covering land acquisition and civil works.

Comprehensive Review and Crowd Management Strategies

In a recent move to ensure readiness, a joint team from multiple departments conducted an inspection of major ghats along the Godavari river. The team, led by NTKMA head Shekhar Singh, NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri, and Nashik city police commissioner Sandeep Karnik, assessed key areas from Ahilyabai Holkar bridge to Naroshankar temple bridge, Veer Savarkar bridge, and up to Laxminarayan ghat.

During the inspection, officials surveyed both riverbanks to:

  1. Study pedestrian movement patterns and identify potential bottlenecks.
  2. Assess entry and exit routes, as well as holding areas for crowd control.
  3. Review the condition of existing facilities and determine needs for repairs, widening, and additional infrastructure at vulnerable points.

This proactive approach underscores the authorities' commitment to leveraging technology and strategic planning for effective disaster preparedness and sanitation management. Several other Kumbh-related infrastructure projects are at various stages of execution and are expected to be completed by March 2027, well ahead of the main bathing dates.

The 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Nashik represents not only a spiritual gathering of historic proportions but also a test of urban planning and logistical prowess, with billions invested to ensure a safe and seamless experience for millions of devotees.
