BJP-led NDA eyes two-thirds majority, seeks support from opposition MPs
NDA aims for two-thirds majority in Lok Sabha

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is strategizing to increase its strength in the Lok Sabha, aiming to secure a two-thirds majority to facilitate key legislative initiatives. This move comes after the alliance faced setbacks in the previous Parliament session due to a lack of the special majority required for constitutional amendments.

Rebel TMC Faction's Support

A rebel faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) claims to have gathered signatures from 19 Lok Sabha MPs pledging support to the NDA government. This development has bolstered the alliance's efforts to expand its numbers and push forward its legislative agenda.

Potential Defections from Shiv Sena (UBT)

Sources within the NDA indicate that the Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, may experience defections. This possibility has been discussed since the alliance's sweeping victory in the Maharashtra assembly polls. The party currently has nine MPs in the Lok Sabha. To avoid losing membership under the anti-defection law, six of these MPs would need to merge with another party, with the Shiv Sena faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde being the most likely option.

Shinde's strong grassroots network and accessibility have enabled him to replace the rival faction in much of Maharashtra, winning over many of its leaders. Uddhav Thackeray's influence is now largely confined to Mumbai.

Strategic Calculations

The political maneuvering, according to sources, will depend on the feasibility of the NDA's overall plan to cross the two-thirds mark of 360 seats in the current Lok Sabha, which has 540 MPs and three vacancies. The alliance aims to consolidate support from opposition parties to strengthen its legislative position.
