Puducherry NDA Candidate Declares Massive Wealth and Legal Entanglements
Jose Charles Martin, the founder of Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK) and son of controversial lottery magnate Santiago Martin, has officially declared his total assets to be worth more than Rs 600 crore. This revelation came as he filed his nomination papers to contest the 2026 assembly polls under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) banner in Kamaraj Nagar, Puducherry.
Detailed Breakdown of Assets and Income
In an affidavit submitted to the returning officer on Monday, Martin disclosed that he and his wife, Sindhu Shree Charles, possess movable assets valued at Rs 340 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 270 crore. His personal luxury holdings include diamond jewels worth Rs 45 crore, luxury watches valued at Rs 38 crore, and 17.5kg of gold jewellery amounting to Rs 26 crore. Additionally, he owns 135kg of silver jewellery and articles worth Rs 3.8 crore.
His wife's assets comprise 3.6kg of gold jewellery worth Rs 5.35 crore, diamond jewellery valued at Rs 2.1 crore, 60kg of silver articles and jewellery worth Rs 1.68 crore, and luxury watches priced at Rs 1.14 crore. Martin reported an income of Rs 59.37 crore for the last financial year, with over Rs 200 crore deposited in various banks and Rs 14.28 crore invested in shares.
Significant Debts and Legal Complications
Despite his substantial wealth, Martin also declared a debt of Rs 210 crore, which includes dues exceeding Rs 1 crore on national and international credit cards. His financial profile is further complicated by several serious legal cases pending in various courts.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has booked him on charges of money laundering, alleging that he used 'proceeds of crime' to purchase assets. This case involves accusations of signing balance sheets that misrepresented illegal funds as unsecured loans.
Additionally, a case related to financial irregularities is pending before the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Ernakulam, Kerala. Three criminal cases concerning lottery ticket sales and financial crimes are also pending in West Bengal, as detailed in his affidavit.
Political Context and Implications
Martin's entry into the political arena under the NDA fold marks a significant development in Puducherry's electoral landscape. His declaration of such high-value assets and concurrent legal issues raises questions about transparency and accountability in political candidacy. The affidavit provides a rare glimpse into the financial dealings of a candidate with ties to the lottery industry, highlighting the intersection of wealth, politics, and legal scrutiny in India.
As the 2026 assembly polls approach, Martin's case is likely to draw attention from voters and regulatory bodies alike, potentially influencing public perception and electoral outcomes in Kamaraj Nagar.
