Manipur and Meghalaya Leaders Unite in Condemning Alleged Racial Assault in Delhi
Political leaders from the northeastern states of Manipur and Meghalaya have issued strong condemnations following reports of an alleged racially motivated assault on two individuals from the region near the Saket Court Complex in New Delhi. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for a swift and thorough investigation alongside stringent legal action against the perpetrators.
Former Manipur Chief Minister Demands Immediate Action
Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh described the incident as "completely unacceptable" and emphasized the urgent need for authorities to conduct a prompt investigation. "People from the northeast must feel safe and be treated with dignity across the entire country," Singh asserted, highlighting the broader issue of security and respect for northeastern communities nationwide.
National People's Party Voices Grave Concern
The National People's Party (NPP) has expressed deep concern over the assault. NPP national vice president Irengbam Hemochandra stated, "This is extremely tragic. Enough is enough. Such acts must stop." He further noted that people from the northeast contribute significantly to nation-building and called for national unity in condemning such incidents.
NPP national general secretary Mmhonlumo Kikon pointed to a systemic problem, stating, "One of the problems is that we refuse to acknowledge that racial discrimination exists in this country." He argued that if racial discrimination were not prevalent, such repeated violence against northeastern individuals would not occur. Kikon unequivocally condemned the acts and urged state governments to establish protective mechanisms and stronger law enforcement to safeguard residents from racial discrimination and violence.
Meghalaya Chief Minister's Strong Condemnation
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma also condemned the alleged assault, describing it as "sickening." In a social media post, he said, "The physical attack on two of our people from Manipur and Assam near Saket Court, Delhi is sickening. Racial bullying should not be accepted as the new normal and we must act against it." Sangma urged authorities to take stringent action to address the issue and prevent such incidents in the future.
Calls for Systemic Change and Protection
The collective response from these leaders underscores a growing demand for:
- Immediate and transparent investigation into the Saket Court Complex incident.
- Stringent legal action against those responsible to serve as a deterrent.
- Acknowledgement of racial discrimination as a persistent issue in India.
- Implementation of protective measures by state governments to ensure the safety of northeastern residents.
- National unity in opposing racial violence and promoting inclusivity.
This incident has reignited discussions on the safety and dignity of northeastern communities in metropolitan areas, with leaders emphasizing that such acts of violence must not become normalized.
