The North East Students' Organisation (Neso), the apex student body of the northeast, on Thursday questioned the Centre's sincerity in resolving the Manipur crisis. Following the killing of six Naga civilians, Neso stated that despite the prolonged deployment of central security personnel across the state, the situation continued to deteriorate.
Concerns Over Central Forces' Conduct
In a statement issued by chairman Samuel B Jyrwa and secretary-general Mutsikhoyo Yhobu, Neso expressed grave concern over numerous allegations regarding the involvement and partisan conduct of central forces in the ongoing conflict.
The organisation posed a critical question: "How is it that after more than three years of conflict and deployment of massive security forces, not a single accused involved in the countless killings, abductions, arson and atrocities has been effectively convicted and held accountable?"
The statement further emphasised that any act of complicity, negligence, collusion or bias by security forces entrusted with maintaining peace and protecting civilians constitutes a serious betrayal of public trust and must face appropriate legal and disciplinary action.
Horror Over Brutal Killings
Neso expressed deep horror over reports that the victims were subjected to torture before being brutally murdered and mutilated, reflecting a level of inhumanity beyond comprehension. The organisation urged the Centre to act decisively to restore public confidence, ensure the safety of all citizens, and bring an end to the culture of impunity that continues to fuel violence in Manipur.
Demand for Impartial Investigation
The organisation unequivocally called for a swift, transparent and impartial investigation into the deaths of the six Naga men. "Every individual involved, irrespective of affiliation or status, must be identified, arrested, prosecuted and brought to justice without delay. Failure to do so will further embolden those who continue to perpetrate violence with impunity," Neso said.
Neso's statement underscores growing frustration with the lack of accountability in the Manipur conflict, where repeated cycles of violence have claimed numerous lives. The student body's call for justice reflects broader concerns among civil society groups in the region.
