The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday conducted extensive raids across multiple locations in Punjab and Haryana as part of its ongoing probe into the terror-gangster nexus linked to Pakistan-based terrorist Shahzad Bhatti. The coordinated searches were carried out at the premises of suspects believed to have been in touch with Bhatti, who is wanted in several cases related to terror funding and criminal activities.
Details of the Raids
According to officials, the NIA teams, assisted by local police, raided around a dozen locations in both states. The searches focused on districts including Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Ferozepur in Punjab, as well as Ambala and Karnal in Haryana. Electronic devices, documents, and other incriminating materials were seized during the operations.
Background of the Case
The case pertains to the activities of Shahzad Bhatti, a designated terrorist based in Pakistan, who is accused of orchestrating a network of operatives in India to carry out subversive activities. Bhatti is believed to have established links with local gangsters and drug smugglers to fund terror operations. The NIA had registered a case last year under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Previous Investigations
Earlier this year, the NIA had arrested several individuals in connection with the same nexus. Investigations revealed that Bhatti had been using encrypted messaging apps to communicate with his associates in India, providing them with instructions and financial support. The agency has also been probing the role of cross-border smuggling routes in facilitating the movement of arms and narcotics.
Official Statements
An NIA spokesperson stated that the raids were part of a concerted effort to dismantle the terror-gangster ecosystem. “We are committed to identifying and neutralizing all elements that pose a threat to national security. The collaboration between terror outfits and criminal syndicates is a serious concern, and we are taking all necessary steps to break these networks,” the spokesperson said.
Reactions from Authorities
Punjab Police and Haryana Police have extended full cooperation to the NIA. A senior police officer from Punjab noted that such operations are crucial in curbing the activities of anti-national elements. “These raids send a strong message to those who attempt to destabilize the region,” the officer added.
Impact and Next Steps
The searches are expected to yield vital leads that could help the NIA in building a stronger case against Bhatti and his associates. Further investigations are underway, and more arrests cannot be ruled out as the agency analyzes the seized material. The NIA has also appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities related to terror funding or criminal networks.
This operation underscores the growing nexus between terror outfits and organized crime, which has become a major challenge for security agencies in India. The NIA’s proactive approach aims to disrupt these linkages before they can cause harm to the nation’s security and integrity.
