NSUI protests in Lucknow against exam leaks, arrests

Lucknow: Scores of members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest march in Lucknow on Sunday against leaks in competitive examinations, including NEET, Lekhpal and Uttar Pradesh sub inspector recruitment tests, and against the arrest of NSUI activists who had been raising the issue.

Led by NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar and NSUI Uttar Pradesh president Anas Rahman, the protesters marched from the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters towards Raj Bhavan.

According to the organisers, police stopped the march before Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg by putting up barricades. During the confrontation, some protesters attempted to move past the barricades. NSUI alleged that police used force to disperse the crowd and claimed that one activist fell unconscious and was admitted to Civil Hospital for treatment.

Police later detained several NSUI workers and transported them to Eco Garden. The detained protesters were released later in the evening, according to the organisation.

Addressing the gathering, Vinod Jakhar accused the BJP-led govt of failing to conduct competitive examinations fairly and demanded accountability over alleged paper leaks. He also called for compensation for the families of students who, according to the organisation, were adversely affected by the issue. Jakhar further demanded action against the National Testing Agency and sought the resignation of union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Anas Rahman said the organisation would continue its protests on issues affecting students and job aspirants, despite police action against its workers.
