The one-day special assembly session focusing on women's participation in democracy is scheduled for Thursday in Bhubaneswar, with authorities implementing stringent security measures. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has positioned the session as a significant step toward enhancing women's empowerment. In contrast, opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Indian National Congress, have criticized the move, labeling it as political propaganda that they intend to counter.
Government Preparations and Briefing
On Wednesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling met Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at Lok Bhavan to outline the session's agenda. The BJP described the initiative as a measure to strengthen women's roles in governance and decision-making processes. Mahaling stated, "It will enhance women's participation in democracy." According to a government statement, the minister also informed the governor about key discussion points for the House. The governor welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the deliberations would be "meaningful and result-oriented."
Opposition's Stance
The BJD and Congress have voiced strong objections to the special session. Deputy Leader of Opposition Prasanna Acharya alleged that the session aims to "mislead" the public regarding the women's reservation issue. He described it as a "seminar-like discussion" devoid of pressing legislative business, questioning whether there is any precedent for convening an assembly for such a purpose. Acharya also cited an incident involving a dead tribal woman in Keonjhar who was exhumed from her burial ground due to government system failures. Congress Legislature Party Leader Rama Chandra Kadam asserted that the government's move would further expose the BJP.
Security Arrangements
The session will be conducted under tight security, with approximately 70 platoons of police deployed in and around the assembly premises. Traffic diversions will be implemented on key routes, including Keshari Talkies, Jaydev Bhawan, IG Park Road, and Power House Square, to ensure smooth proceedings and public safety.
