Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Retains Position After No-Confidence Motion Defeated
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla resumed his duties on Thursday after the House decisively rejected a no-confidence motion moved against him by opposition parties. The motion was defeated through a voice vote, concluding an intense and lengthy debate that spanned nearly 12 hours across two days.
Historic Debate and Democratic Process
Addressing the House after the resolution seeking his removal was voted down, Birla emphasized the significance of the discussion. "In the parliamentary history of independent India, this is the third time that the House has discussed a no-confidence motion against the Speaker of the Lok Sabha," he stated. "Over the past two days, honourable members have held extensive discussions so that the views, arguments and concerns of all members could be presented before the House."
Birla highlighted the democratic essence of the Lok Sabha, noting that it reflects the sovereign will of India's 1.4 billion citizens. "Every member present here comes with the mandate of lakhs of citizens and carries the hope of addressing their problems, deprivations and difficulties, as well as fulfilling their aspirations and expectations," he remarked.
Commitment to Impartiality and Parliamentary Traditions
The Speaker reiterated his commitment to conducting House proceedings with fairness and discipline. "I have always tried to conduct the proceedings of the House with impartiality, discipline, balance and in accordance with the rules," Birla asserted. He acknowledged the contributions of his predecessors in strengthening parliamentary traditions and stressed the importance of preserving decorum within the institution.
"Institutions, decorum and traditions remain permanent. I express my gratitude to all members for the confidence expressed in me by the House," he said, adding his assurance to fulfill responsibilities with dedication and constitutional propriety.
Opposition Allegations and House Exchanges
The no-confidence motion had been backed by 118 opposition MPs, who accused Birla of bias during parliamentary sessions. More than 42 members participated in the debate, which also witnessed sharp exchanges between political factions.
Reacting to allegations that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was not permitted to speak, Birla clarified that opportunities to address the House are granted strictly according to parliamentary rules. "Every member has the right to speak as per the rules," he stated, emphasizing that no individual is above established regulations.
During the proceedings, Union Home Minister Amit Shah engaged in a heated exchange with Congress members, accusing the party of spreading misinformation regarding Indian farmers and trade deals. Shah contended that real setbacks occurred during WTO negotiations in 2013 under the previous Congress-led government.
The rejection of the no-confidence motion underscores the ongoing political dynamics within the Lok Sabha, as Speaker Om Birla continues to steer parliamentary affairs amidst opposition scrutiny and robust democratic discourse.
